Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Course with a Polar Expedition Focus

4-day course with Polar & Mountain Guide Rob Smith. In collaboration with Polar Expedition Training

The must do skills course for personal development for expedition travel in most polar regions and winter glacial terrain.  Led by Rob Smith, a renowned polar expedition traveller and mountaineer, this 4-day course is based out of Finse, Norway on the Hardangerjokulen.  Aimed to  grow your confidence on glaciers with a focus on crevasse rescue and safety.  Polar expeditions to Greenland, Iceland, Arctic Canada, Svalbard and Antarctica commonly travel  on glaciers with crevassed areas. Be prepared. Build your confidence, skills and safety.


Course content will be tailored to the snow, ice and weather conditions at the time of the course. 

Subjects covered will include:

  • Use of ice axe & crampons
  • Self arrest
  • Snow & ice anchors
  • Glacier dynamics and crevasse hazards
  • Route selection & travel techniques
  • Equipment for glacier travel
  • Roping up for glacier travel
  • Attaching pulk to rope system
  • Crevasse rescue -  self rescue and assisted rescue


Dates: 24-27 August, 2026

Costs: £1650.00

Min number: 4

What is included: 1:4 ratio guide/instructor to participant, accommodation and food in Finse while on the course, group safety equipment and ropes.

What is not included: travel to and from Finse, Norway, personal clothing, harness, axe, crampons and personal rescue equipment such as slings, carabiners, prussik cord, boots
